The Catalunya RX is approaching and new confirmations of pilots who will participate in the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on July 23 and 24 are coming to light. The three-time world Rallycross champion trades Volkswagen for Audi to defend the World RX title. For the first time, he won’t compete at the wheel of a Volkswagen Polo and will go on to compete under the colors of the Audi S1 EKS Supercar, becoming a member of the team of his main rival in previous years, Mattias Ekström. His teammate will be the Belgian Enzo Ide.

The 32-year-old Swede became world champion for the first time in 2017, and did so again the following year. In 2019 he was unable to participate, but in 2020, after some competitive duels with his compatriot Mattias Ekström, he won a new title. In this way, he is the most successful driver in the history of the FIA World Rallycross Championship, which makes him the current benchmark.

The beggining

Johan is the son of former racing driver and Kristoffersson Motorsport (KMS) team owner Tommy Kristoffersson. He competed for his father’s team in the Junior Touring Car Championship in 2008, where he finished fourth after winning two races during the season. He achieved success in the Superstars International Series Championship in 2012, the same year that he won the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship and the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia.

In 2014, the Swede competed part-time in the FIA World Rallycross Championship, finishing third in Belgium. In 2015 he won in Portugal and achieved podiums in the United Kingdom, Spain, Turkey and Italy, finishing third in the final classification.

Before winning the three World Championships in 2017, 2018 and 2020, in 2016 he obtained a victory and three podiums, and was runner-up in the general Supercars classification, behind Mattias Ekström. He currently leads the Extreme E rankings after getting two victories in the first two events.

Motivation to revalidate the crown

In statements collected by the FIA World Rallycross Championship, Johan Kristoffersson expressed his joy at participating in the World Championship again: “I’m very pleased that I can contest a full World RX season, and to do so with a new team is like a new challenge for me. EKS JC know how to win races and championships, and after our first test days, we saw that we could learn from each other. The whole team are very motivated to achieve the goal of defending my Driver title and, together with Enzo, also the Teams’ title”.

“The target when you enter a championship as the reigning champion is always to win it again, but that’s certainly no easy task. It’s a position I’ve been in twice already, and we will do whatever it takes to fight for the crown this year. We are ready”.

The man to beat

Kristoffersson is the most successful driver in the FIA World Rallycross Championship. In 61 starts, he has obtained 24 victories, 36 podiums and 3 championships. He is the man to beat. So far, all this has been achieved at the wheel of a Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar, one of the strongest RX cars in the world in recent years. In this way, the change from Johan to EKS JC opens the doors to an unknown path, but one that is expected to be just as successful.

Mattias Ekström, owner of the EKS JC team, is delighted to partner with the Swedish rider: “If you can’t beat him, join him. I’ve had many great battles with Johan and I think everyone can agree he has a unique skill set, so for me, he is a perfect fit for EKS JC’s 2021 campaign”.

The team director, Joel Christoffersson, joins Mattias’s words: “Johan is the most successful World RX driver to-date, and I am very happy that we can have him in our team next to Enzo. His experience and knowledge will help us to develop further, and also for Enzo this will be a great opportunity to learn from the very best”.

Guaranteed thrill

Johan is one of the great confirmed drivers and a safe bet to guarantee excitement and fight in all the races he competes. Wherever he goes, the show is assured. EKS JS and all the fans attending Catalunya RX will expect a lot of adrenaline, but their rivals will do their best to stop him. Timo Scheider, Enzo Ide, Kevin Abbring, Niclas Grönholm, Krisztian Szabo and the Hansen brothers are the other confirmed drivers so far.

The new edition of the World RX will begin with the clashes on Friday and Saturday afternoon at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on July 23 and 24. Germany, Sweden, France, Latvia, Belgium and Portugal complete an eight-round schedule.
