Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson took the victory in the first race of the FIA World Rallycross Championship held in Montalegre, Portugal. Defending champion Petter Solberg finished second while the third step of the podium was for Timmy Hansen.

The second edition of the FIA World Rallycross Championship has begun in Portugal last weekend of April, where the rain has been present along the two days. The water has left a wet and slippery track, demanding maximum all pilots to avoid making any mistakes. In these circumstances, Kristoffersson has managed to place in front of the first line of the final next to Petter Solberg. Behind, the remaining four positions of the final have been occupied by Hansen, Andreas Bakkerud, Davy Jeanney and PG Andersson. Kristoffersson, has not only managed to be the fastest after the six laps but has also been the first to reach the first corner and achieving the Monster Energy Super Charge Award.

Johan has confirmed he was “so, so happy” after starting the championship with this fantastic result. The conditions were not easy “I nearly stalled the engine on the start line and the whole circuit was unbelievably slippery but I drove a clean race. I couldn’t see out of the side windows so it was more about survival than actual racing.  I want to say a big, big thank you to Volkswagen Sweden and to my entire team who have done a fantastic job over the past few months. They have worked very hard to build this car which has been working well all weekend.  It’s the best possible start to the season.”

The next weekend, May 1-2-3, the second round of the World Rallycross Championship will take place at Hockenheim, Germany . And the countdown to the Barcelona RX is already underway. The pilots of the FIA World Rallycross Championship will reach the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in September.
