Countdown to the return of Catalunya RX at the Circuit de Barcelona
  • Countdown to the return of Catalunya RX at the Circuit de Barcelona with a new afternoon format and a new electrical category
  • The Covid protocol will allow a limited audience in the stadium stands.

The wait is almost over. In just a few days, the Catalunya RX, the inaugural round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship, returns at the Cicuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on July 23 and 24 with an edition that presents some new features and promises a lot of adrenaline.

The levels of emotion are through the roof, and it is that the contest has been inactive for more than half a year. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was precisely the setting that unexpectedly closed the 2020 season last October, with a calendar notoriously shortened by the pandemic.

In addition to some new faces among the participants, the format presents news regarding their schedules, with an afternoon format to better cope with the high temperatures. In addition, the competition will take place on Friday and Saturday, something that is not usually usual.

What to expect from the premier class

Defending the champion title, Johan Kristoffersson leads that roster of drivers. The three-time WorldRX champion changes units, heading into the season in an Audi S1 under the colors of the KYB EKS JC, founded by two-time DTM champion Mattias Ekström and led by Joel Christoffersson. An impressive candidacy, considering that the team achieved the constructors’ title in its first participation in 2020.

Kristoffersson will share the squad with Lorenzo Ide, while brothers Timmy and Kevin Hansen will once again try their luck with the family team, the Hansen World RX Team. Timmy, the oldest of the brothers, has a crown in his track record and knows what it’s like to win in Barcelona, so he will surely be a threat from the start with the Peugeot 208.

Niclas Grönholm presents a complete kit at his disposal. Although he still doesn’t have a world title, the Finnish came very close to achieving it in 2019, when he had some health problems. Now, both he and Krisztián Szabó formalize their participation with the GRX-SET WorldRX Team, driving the Hyundai i20.

After impressing in a series of one-off appearances, including leading the final on his Norwegian debut two years ago, former rally driver Kevin Abbring finally gets his big shot at Rallycross this season in a Renault Megane with the Unkorrupted team. The two-time DTM champion Timo Scheider, who achieved his first WorldRX podium in Barcelona in 2017, is excited to repeat or improve on that performance at ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport’s Seat Ibiza.

The FIA RX2e Championship and the electric age

In the newly created FIA RX2e Championship, fans will be able to glimpse the new era of the sport with an intriguing mix of young talents and experienced hands, all attempting to secure the first ever FIA Electric Rallycross Championship title.

With the incorporation of a motor in each axis that together provide 335 CV of power, the RX2, known as a ‘pocket rocket’, will surely give away excellent races, letting the cutting edge be the one to show off your driving skills. It’s jointly developed by the Catalan specialist in electric mobility QEV Technologies and the Swedish company Olsbergs MSE.

The RX3, the cradle of talent

The Euro RX3 series (formerly known as Super1600) of the FIA European Rallycross Championship will also start its season in Barcelona. Having been a breeding ground for numerous heroes of the discipline, including Szabó, Bakkerud and Timerzyanov, it will be fascinating to see who emerges at the top this year and has their own right to rallycross stardom in the future.
