The WorldRX premieres at the Circuit de Barcelona on April 14th. What do you have to know about the championship? Here we leave you a summary.
The list of permanent competitors for the WorldRX FIA 2018 is made up of 15 pilots. 8 of them have already won some World Championship test in previous editions.
A Permanent competitors will be joined by up to ten round-by-round riders in each event. The grid will consist of six teams and three individual teams. This season will be the first involving cars from six different manufacturers.
High expectations in the competition.
The current RX world champion, Johan Kristoffersson, will take the coveted number one on his PSRX Volkswagen Sweden Polo RX. The Swede will share equipment once again with the 2014 and 2015 title winner, Petter Solberg. With this pair of pilots, Volskwagen will try to revalidate the Championship.
Mattias Ekström, world champion in 2016, will try to fight for the championship with his Audi S1. The EKS Audi Sport, has joined the team Norwegian Andreas Bakkerud, who has won six times a WorldRX test.
The high level at the wheel does not end here. The 9-time world rally champion, Sébastien Loeb, will share a team with the Hansen brothers (Timmy and Kevin). The Peugeot Total Team expects to be competitive with its new Peugeot 208. Thus, they will be able to compete for the individual title, which they have never won, and that of teams that have not been able to lift it since 2015.
In addition, we find teams that return to the WorldRX, as is the case of Olsberg MSE. After a year of absence, they return to compete with their new Ford Fiesta. A team that opens for the World Cup is the GC Kompetition. The French team of owner and driver Guerlain Chicherit, has recruited Grosset-Janin. The French rallycross champion will drive the new Renault Megane RS. Who will compete the entire Championship this year is the Taneco Team, after participating in loose races in the previous editions. Now, with Niclas Gronholm and Timur Timerzyanov, they will try to compete for points with a Hyundai i20.
The General RX Director General, Paul Bellamy, commented: “With 15 drivers, including eight winners and three champions, the FIA 2018 World Rally Championship hopes to be very competitive.”
The WorldRX 2018 comprises 12 races this season. As a novelty, this year, it will be the first time a race has been held at Silverstone, WorldRX of Britain. In addition, the Championship will also visit the Circuit of the Americas, Austin, USA for the first time.
But before this, the season starts with the WorldRX of Catalunya from April 14 to 15.
